City of Culture bid unsuccessful

Hereford as Candidate City.

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has just announced the short-list for UK City of Culture 2021 and sadly Hereford did not make it despite a distinctive and ambitious bid.

Competition was intense with 10 other cities running for the title. Launching the bid for Hereford is a group known as the Herefordshire Cultural Partnership (HCP).  Their spokesperson said…”Though we are naturally disappointed, we have been hugely inspired by the creativity and collaboration shown by so many individuals and organisations in support of the campaign.  The work has already born fruit in fresh ideas and partnerships and we will continue to pursue our vision of enriching the lives of all who live, work and visit Herefordshire through arts and culture. “

HCP has already been awarded significant funding to run the national Great Places project in Herefordshire from The Heritage Lottery Fund, working with Arts Council England and Historic England.

The Partnership will continue to meet as a group and look for new opportunities.  It is committed to developing a shared vision and cultural strategy for Herefordshire for the next 10 years.
