10th Anniversary of Autumn Luncheons

This year represented the eleventh year running that we’ve organised an informal autumn lunch at Doggett’s Coat & Badge beside the Thames.

We started back in November 2006 with a sit down meal in the Terrace Bar, at which there were THIRTY Old Herefordians present.  That event, representing our inaugural OHiL gathering staged towards the end of the year, was the start of what has now become a regular meeting of OHs each autumn.  Having formerly been held at the beginning of November up until 2013, it was decided in 2014 to move the function back by about three weeks, to the THIRD THURSDAY in OCTOBER in an attempt to avoid clashing with other events.

Thus it was that this particular event took place on 20th October 2016 and was attended by just 28 people. Because of a drop in numbers this year (previous attendances have seen as many as 60 OHs & guests) we took the opportunity to make full use of the open-air balcony so that the above group photograph could be taken.  It shows the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral in the centre back skyline, (please click on image to enlarge it) with the City environs beyond.

Trish returns!

We welcomed back Mrs Patricia Brittain as our special guest again (seen here on the right in colourful dress) which represented the 7th time she has attended an OHiL lunchtime event. School House boarders from the 1950’s era may recall that, as a young girl Trish used to occupy No.1, Castle Street when her father, the late Alan F. J. Hopewell MA., (Cantab) was Headmaster. Hoppy, as students affectionately nicknamed him, was himself an OH (1908 – 1911) having served as an Officer at Gallipoli during the Great War. After qualifying as a teacher, he returned to his old school in 1944, and a year later was appointed Headmaster.  He is believed to be the ONLY student to have become Head of his former school!
